Vampire Raiding Party
Geraldo's two pit bulls were the terror of the neighborhood. He thought they were sweet and adorable. Except that they didn't like little yappy dogs. It wasn't their fault the time they killed the obnoxious Pomeranian owned by the old lady down the street. If he were a dog, he would have killed the furry rat, too.
The old lady lived in one of the super-sweet homes at the end of the long street, the homes on the Intracoastal. They were selling for millions nowadays. Geraldo's home was at the opposite end, near the main road, behind the bar where the bikers got into brawls. He liked to walk his dogs to the rich end of the street and watch the residents pick up their rat-dogs and retreat inside when they saw him coming.
Tonight he was walking them way later than usual because he had been out partying. Brutus, the bigger dog, picked up a scent ahead. Guapa did, too. They strained at their leashes, pulling him along with them.
Was it a raccoon? No, something bigger. It was on the other side of a ficus hedge in the house just ahead. Brutus and Guapa were growling now. He'd never seen them so agitated before. What was that animal?
As Geraldo and his dogs approached, the hedge rustled violently. The dense, tiny-leaved trees were trimmed to eight-feet high and were impossible to see through in the darkness, but whatever was messing with them was tall. Too big to be a dog, coyote or deer. Bigger than a panther, too. Was it a bear? This area was too urban to have bears, though.
If it was a Florida black bear, though, wouldn't it be cool if Geraldo's dogs caught it? Man, just think of the video he could shoot on his phone. It would totally go viral.
They were close to the hedge now, but still opposite where the creature was. The dogs were going crazy. Geraldo unclipped them from their leashes and let them pursue their prey. They raced away from him and around the end of the hedge. Geraldo jogged after them, hoping to capture video of what was happening on the other side.
There wasn't the sound of a battle going on, just constant barking. Maybe they had the beast at bay.
But then two pit-bull rockets launched from the end of the hedge and almost knocked him over as they fled down the street toward home. Geraldo stood there befuddled.
Until the bear rounded the end of the hedge and saw him. It stood upright, towering over him more than twice his height. It was as big as a city bus. It opened its mouth, big enough to fit Geraldo in his entirety, and roared like a freight train inches from hitting him.
Then it charged.
Geraldo didn't even have time to wet his pants. If he had, it wouldn't have mattered because his pants and legs ended up in the Morris' yard while the rest of him rained down on the Goodmans' viburnum and into the Sanchez's swimming pool.
